Embrace the "Food Pantry" Diet

I'm coining the new diet craze of this decade: The Food Pantry Diet

​

You can find a dedicated website for every State that lists every available food bank in a county.

​

It's a simple diet, really.  You can eat anything you want, as long as it's free and comes from a Food Pantry or any kind of Food relief program from the government or charitable organization.

​

Given the skyrocketing inflation that has hit the monetary supply, your groceries have now quadrupled since Covid began.

​

Make no mistake, food will continue to rise.  As a result, one has to change their dietary habits to get used to what their food options will be going forward in this country. 

 

You need to make dedicated changes to your diet not only for your wallet, but for longevity purposes.

​

You will need to utilize the Food Pantry as the foundation for your diet, and then supplement in what you don't receive from the pantry by purchasing food from discount grocers.

​

What's a Cheap "Healthy" Diet Look Like?

​

This page isn't meant to provide nutritional advice.  I want to give you the best "balanced" diet you can get for the money.

 

Whole foods are what everyone can agree should be the majority of your diet. 

 

No slop here.  I don't want you going the route of just eating Ramen Noodles and let your health deteriorate.  However, given the cost of meat nowadays, you are going to have to adapt to eating less meat overall, unless you receive meat from a pantry or you are ok eating canned meat.

Here is what your diet is going to look like when trying to stay cheap and avoid most allergens:

​

Some kind of grain for carbs (preferably no wheat)

Some kind of legume for protein if you don't eat meat (soy, beans, or lentils)

Vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned)

Fruit (fresh, frozen, or canned)

Some form of Meat (fresh, canned, or frozen)

Tactics With Grocery Shopping

Tik Tok confirms that people have no idea how to shop for groceries

​

 

Do NOT buy a bunch of prepackaged junk food and then whine and complain on Tik Tok about the high cost of grocery prices.

Do NOT buy brand name items.

Do NOT buy already prepared meals and precut vegetables & fruit.

Do NOT buy any dessert items, including cookies, sweets, chips, cereals, and the like.

Gameplan on How to Approach Grocery Shopping

You are going to research the weekly ad for every grocery store you will visit.  You will only buy the sale items on that ad.

 

Plan on making rice/potato bowls with legumes, cooked vegetables, and maybe some meat as well.

Basically, you are going to have grains/starchy veggies be the filler calories while you add the vegetables, meat, and beans on top.

The fruit will be your breakfast and hydration throughout the day until your heavier evening meals.

​

Buy a bulk load of potatoes, oatmeal, and rice/quinoa on every grocery visit.  This will be the foundation for all of your cooked meals.

Buy whatever fruits and vegetables you can find that are on sale. 

Apples, pears, oranges, and bananas are some of the cheapest fruits. 

Spinach, carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, beets, and green beans are all affordable staples to cook with your grains.

Avoid tomatoes, onions, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables if you have bowel problems.

You can get cans of beans, dry beans, or just tofu squares 

Find whatever meat is on clearance first, then look only at whatever sales there are on meat.

Some More Grocery Shopping Tips

If you shop at a Grocer with a butcher, ask them for their cheapest cuts of meat.  Many times you can get meat much cheaper than the standard $5 a pound that you see in stores today.

Look for discounts on meat nearing expiration.  Those are always first priority.

If you must get snacks, get them from Aldi.

If you are vegetarian and prefer to eat dairy, Aldi also has the cheapest prices on cheese, milk, and yogurt.

The cheapest gluten free grains are rice, quinoa and oatmeal.  Costco offers the best deal on all of them, but you can still get god prices on them at Aldi, Trader Joe's, and Winco.

​Frozen vegetables can save you a lot of time and energy as they're already precut and easy to store.  Many of them come in microwavable bags which makes adding them to a rice bowl a piece of cake.

Your options for inexpensive fruit will undoubtedly include bananas.  The trick is that you can use bananas as a meal on their own (adding cinnamon, honey, jelly, or syrup to your liking), and as the foundation for smoothies.  ​

Frozen mangos are the cheapest frozen fruit you can get from most grocers.  You can easily add them to bananas in your blender for a great cheap smoothie option on its own without adding anything else (just let them thaw out).

Canned fruits and vegetables are an option, but they are less ideal than frozen.  Choose frozen over canned anytime if budget permits.

Important: Download the Grocery Store Apps for the particular store you're visiting as many have a points-based system you can utilize in your favor.  

​

Many grocers not lock away sales behind digital only coupons that you can use up to 5 times as a means to prevent hoarding by customers.

​

Bottom Line:  You will need to get crafty and adapt to preparing your foods and making your own meals.

​

Recommended Grocers

The Grocery store you shop at will ultimately decide what your grocery bill will look like.

​

I implore you to utilize Aldi, Trader Joe's, Grocery Outlet (Bargain Market), Walmart, Winco, BJs, and Food 4 Less exclusively for all of your grocery shopping on top of your Food Pantry finds.

​

My favorite Grocer that I rely on the most in my area is Aldi.  I absolutely appreciate Grocery Outlet and Trader Joe's, but Aldi's has the most consistent experience every time.

​

The checkout experience is more streamlined at Aldi.  There is more parking at the Aldi lot.  The prices are cheaper overall.  I'm relatively in and out much faster than at any other grocery store.

​

Aldi offers one of the best return policies next to Costco.  Don't like an item for any reason?  You can get a full refund with a receipt.  don't have the receipt?  You can still get store credit.  Aldi also has the "Twice as Nice" guarantee on all in-house Aldi products: If you are not satisfied with an Aldi product, simply mention the "Twice as Nice" promotion and you can exchange the item and get a full refund as well.

Cheap Restaurants

Traditional Fast Food

Every  main fast food restaurant now offers their own version of a $5 meal deal.

I'd also recommend using the apps for these fast food restaurants exclusively as the apps have their own coupons and promos that are much more reasonable than what you'd normally get if just ordering at the establishment.

In-N-Out Burger

In-N-Out will far and away be the cheapest fast casual restaurant you'll still find on the West Coast. 

All of the burger competitors like Habit Burger are far too expensive for the small portion sizes you get.

A regular hamburger

Little Cesar's

The struggle meal reward for many people if they wanted takeout.  Those $5 pizzas are long gone, and now you're looking at $10 for the same pizza.  Still, it's an option if you aren't near a Costco Food Court.

​

Subway

A 6 inch sub is now a ridiculous $7 (Remember the 5 Dollar Footlongs?), but Subway routinely offers coupons and bogo codes if you have their app.  Many times Subway will allow you to pay an extra $3 to upgrade the six inch to a Footlong and include chips and a drink with it.

​

Sonic

Mediocre food aside, Sonic does offer half off their drinks and slushes during happy hours and on their app.  Sonic does have a decent deal on their hotdogs, so that's worth a look too.

​

Chili's

Everyone has heard about the $11 Burger Deal thanks to Tik Tok, and it's still a good value today.

Cheapest Prepared Foods

The Costco Food Court is where you will find the cheapest prepared meals.

​

Costco pepperoni and cheese pizza: $10 for a large pizza that tastes better than Little Cesar's.

​

Costco Hot Dog: The infamous $1.50 Hot Dog & a Drink combo will never go away.

​

Costco Rotisserie Chicken: The classic $5 rotisserie chicken at Costco now comes in the cheaper plastic bags, but they are still the best deal on a chicken anywhere.  Grab multiples of these to help you meal plan for an entire week.

​

Many grocers do offer daily specials on items like rotisserie chickens, prepared sushi, and other deli items.
